Breast
augmentation is a surgical procedure used to enhance the shape
and size of a woman's breast. The procedure is
usually performed to enlarge small, underdeveloped breasts
or breasts that have decreased in size after pregnancy.
What
is generally considered a "normal breast" is highly
variable - cosmetic breast surgery may be the answer for women
who feel their breasts are small or large
or not ideally contoured.
In
the past, silicone gel-filled implants were
used for breast augmentation, but the FDA removed this
type of implant in 1992 to perform further studies on the safety.
With continual research being performed to further improve breast augmentation
the introduction of different types of implant material has the
possibility of becoming available in the future.
However,
breast implants are like any other man-made implantable medical device (such as heart valves and
artificial joints), and realistically some patients will require
revisionary procedures.
