This section
will take a look
at the subject of breast augmentation. Other topics that contain
information for women can be found further down the page.
Breast
augmentation can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence,
but it won't necessarily change your
looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you
differently. The social acceptance of cosmetic surgery like a
breast augmentation has allowed more information to be made available
and more safely.
Breast
augmentation is changing the shape of the world. Also known as
augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation
has been a growing area of plastic surgery every year for the
past ten years.
The
implants in general use for breast augmentation in the United States
are a saline filled silastic (silicone
plastic) bag. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons,
breast augmentation is the third most commonly performed
cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States.
More
than a quarter of a million women opted for breast augmentation
in 2005, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
If you're considering breast augmentation,
be sure you understand fully what's involved in the surgery, have
realistic expectations, and know the possible risks and complications
associated with implants.
Breast
augmentation is a surgical procedure used to enhance the shape
and size of a woman's breast. The procedure is
usually performed to enlarge small, underdeveloped breasts
or breasts that have decreased in size after pregnancy.
What
is generally considered a "normal breast" is highly
variable - cosmetic breast surgery may be the answer for women
who feel their breasts are small or large
or not ideally contoured.
In
the past, silicone gel-filled implants were
used for breast augmentation, but the FDA removed this
type of implant in 1992 to perform further studies on the safety.
With continual research being performed to further improve breast augmentation
the introduction of different types of implant material has the
possibility of becoming available in the future.
However,
breast implants are like any other man-made implantable medical device (such as heart valves and
artificial joints), and realistically some patients will require
revisionary procedures.
