This section
will take a look at the subject of Menopause. Other topics that
contain information for women can be found further down the page.
Menopause
occurs when menstruation ceases for a period of one year; the
ten to fifteen years prior to menopause are
called perimenopause.
Compared
to men, many women before the age of menopause seem to be partly
protected from coronary heart disease, heart attack
and stroke. As women age, their risk of heart
disease and stroke rises.
In
some cultures menopause is seen as a
time when older women can help support the younger women as they
raise their children. The older women are revered
for their wisdom and knowledge.
Menopause
usually occurs naturally, but can be induced
by certain types of surgery (e.g., hysterectomy; called surgical
menopause), chemotherapy, and pelvic radiation therapy.
Menopause
is a process that occurs over a period of five to 10 years. It
begins when a woman's body slows down its production of estrogen
and progesterone, the hormones responsible for ovulation and maintaining
pregnancy, and ovulation and menstrual periods become irregular
and eventually cease.
The
menopause is sometimes known as the change
of life, and is marked by the ending of menstruation. Menopause is a natural biological
process, not a medical illness. Although it's
associated with hormonal, physical and psychosocial changes in
your life, menopause isn't the end of your youth or of your sexuality.
Menopause
is a normal part of life, just like puberty. Menopause symptoms can range from mild hot spells at
night to constant dripping sweats all day and night. Some women
spot for a few months, others bleed heavily for years.
Menopause
may occur normally in women as young as 40. Premature menopause
is menopause
occurring before age 40 (see Menopause: Premature Menopause).
Insomnia
is a common complaint of women in perimenopause or menopause
itself. Night sweats may disrupt sleep. Irritability and depression
can impair sleep. Because menopause
is a transition between two times of life, it is not a disease
that has a cure or treatment. Your doctor, however, can
offer a variety of treatments for hot flashes and other bothersome
menopausal symptoms.
After
menopause,
the decrease in estrogen causes changes in the reproductive tract
over a period of months or years. The lining of the vagina becomes
thinner, drier, and less elastic (a condition called vaginal atrophy).
The
body's metabolism changes during and after menopause. This change occurs slowly,
so it may take a while for the impact of eating habits to affect
weight.
Menopause
is a metamorphosis, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. The
medical definition of menopause
is the absence of menstruation for 12 months.
